More on the magic created for guests—creations that mirror their interests.

These horses are shown last month made with water-based clay so they would harden and then be painted with a bronze look.

This is the bronze look.

The mold of Mephistopheles that was featured in the July issue has been utilized to make a plain chocolate version and a chocolate version with gold and red cocoa-butters (pictured)—with some assistance in airbrushing from one of the chefs (a gold-medal winner of the Young Chef competition in the US) at Mr. Gutman’s hotel.

A cast was also made from resin & plaster, with a small magnet embedded at the back.

If these seem too complex to follow, then the following simpler fruit creations may encourage others to follow in Mr. Gutman’s footsteps:

Meanwhile, Mr. Gutman continues to work on improving his craft:

Here is the latest creation from Mr. Gutman: What appears to be Mephistopheles, a demon featured in German folklore and originally appearing in literature as the demon in the Faust legend.

This is the original sculpture.

And this is the casting from it in stone—really a casting mix called «drystone,» the benefit of which is that it retains its white color, whereas other mixes come out greyish.

Next on the agenda is casting in chocolate for guests.

It has been a year since Mr. Gutman shared the artwork he creates for the guests at his hotel. He has not been idle meanwhile: Here we have a creative way of presenting a watermelon that was tailored to the guest interests—

and an expressive clay statue.

If art is the quality of communication, and that is as good a definition as any, then these communications certainly qualify, adding value to the guest experience.

If you are inspired, remember that Mr. Gutman has had no training at all on any of these subjects—just what his own interest, research, native skills, and desire-to-please have opened up to him.

Wood Photo Transfer

Here is an easy and a very special creation you can make for your guests to take home some memorable moments of their vacation, or as a personal touch to decorate their room and make them feel at home, and much more – a wood photo transfer.

For this project you will need a computer and printer, a gel medium (I used Liquitex Gloss Gel), a soft brush, a flat piece of wood and a bowl of water.

  1. On the computer, prepare the photo to be printed.  Add any desired design and text.

  1. Once done, flip the finished photo so it is a mirror image of itself as it will be flipped again in the transfer process.  Set it at the desired size and print (inkjet or a laser printer) and print a copy.

  1. Using the brush, apply a thin layer of the gel medium on the wood.

  1. Apply a thin layer of the gel medium on the printed photo.

  1. Set the printed photo on the wood. Be careful not to move the  paper once it has set, as this may smear the ink. Remove any air bubbles with a small piece of hard plastic.

  1. Let the gel dry overnight or, if you wish to speed the process, use a hair dryer.

  1. Once dry, dip your fingers in a bowl of water and start rubbing the paper, making it very damp. Be gentle, to avoid rubbing off the ink. This step can also be done in a sink, under running water.

Repeat until the paper starts to crumble and peel off.

  1. Once the paper has been removed completely, let the wood dry and there you have it: Your photo on wood!

The Easter Bunny Napkin Fold

by Kobi Gutman

For this Easter weekend, start with a square napkin and

  1. Fold it in half and then in half again in the same direction, resulting in a rectangle    shape;

  1. Fold down both sides, creating a point top;

  1. Fold up both bottom corners so they meet at the middle
    of the napkin;

  1. Fold up the bottom sides of the square in such a way that each side is aligned with the center fold;

  1. Fold the top part backwards (for some it might be
    easier to turn the napkin over, fold the top down and
    then turn the napkin over again);

  1. Roll the right side horizontally past the middle point.
    This will create a little “pocket.” Tuck in the left corner
    inside this pocket;

  1. Place the napkin vertically, fluff the ears and here it is…
    The Easter Bunny!

Origami Buttlerfly

by Kobi Gutman

Origami is the well-known Japanese art of paper folding. Origami paper is square and comes in various colors, patterns and finishes. We can use this art to add a nice touch to a turndown amenity, birthday décor, etc.

Here is an easy and beautiful butterfly fold that I use for a little extra touch in a flower arrangement

1. As a preparation step we are going to fold in half and then unfold the paper – vertically, horizontally and diagonally (both diagonals) to create creases. This will make the next fold easy to do.

2. Bring together the middle points of all four sides of the paper.

3. This is what you should have produced

4. Fold up the 2 top flaps

5. Turn the paper over

6. Turn the top flap upwards so that the tip is slightly higher then the top of the paper

7. Turn the tip over to the other side

8. Turn the paper over and fold it backwards

9. And here is your butterfly!

An Apple flower

This next apple carving is one of my favorites and only takes two minutes to make.

  1. Cut an American-football-like shape at the top of the apple by making 2 simple cuts from opposite directions.

2. Cut a similar shape inside the football.

Note: Although the photo shows these pieces slid outward to create a single petal, it is better to slide them out later on step 5

3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 five or more times around the top of the apple.

4.  Between each 2 petals, cut out a single football shape.

5. Spray some lemon on the cut pieces to prevent the apple from browning, fan out the petals and serve.
